The 2009 Lodge Winter Banquet was held January 10 at the VSC. 166 Lodge Brothers, family members and guests attended with TQB having 42 members present!

This was indeed TQB's night -
Colin P. received the Founder's Award
Mr. Shields received the Founder's Award
Andrew W. received the Key Three Youth Award
Mr. Guerin received the Key Three Adult Award
TQB was awarded 68 of the 77 Service Hawk Awards earned in the Lodge

TQB was overwhelmingly Chapter of the Year (Third time in last four years!)

The Founder's Award is the highest honor a Lodge can bestow upon a member and represents the total personal commitment to the Order of the Arrow, the Obligation of the Order and our principles of Brotherhood Cheerfulness and Service by the recipient. Congratulations to Colin P. and Mr. Shields - both of our Brothers are fully deserving of this esteemed honor.

The Key Three Award is decided upon by the Lodge Chief, Lodge Adviser and Lodge Staff Adviser and is presented in recognition of exceptional service to the Lodge and her members by the recipient. Andrew W. was singled out for his outstanding work on Summerfest 2009 and Mr. Guerin for the excellence he displayed as an Adviser for Adventure Camp 2009. The Key Three wished there could be two Youth Awards because they were greatly impressed by the work of Michael R. on Adventure Camp as well. Apparently the deciding factor was that Summerfest was a totally new event.

The fact remains that the Brothers of TQB get the job done and done correctly! What an honor it is to be associated with each of you outstanding Arrowmen. Thank you for a stellar year and a 2010 which will be even better!!

Thank you from Mr. Holt about Summerfest

Once again the Brothers of TQB took on a task for the Lodge -- stepped up to the task and excelled beyond expectations!!

I want to personally thank each TQB Brother who worked Summerfest this year for making certain no one could possibly leave hungry -- what an effort and result! I am sincerely proud of you.

A special thank you goes to Mr. Ski and Mr. Weaver for one more example of cooking excellence! Man does this Chapter eat good or what!?!?!?

Our TQB Drum put on a stellar performance -- you lads have come so far so fast it is amazing. Absolutely great work lads - we are all proud of the work you have put into making ours the Best Drum in the Region, bar none.

I was surprised, touched and honored by the song our Drum dedicated to me. Thank you lads - you each have excelled and my respect for you is total.

A huge thank you to Doc Sandlin for all his hard work and dedication in building the TQB Drum into an outstanding crew from absolutely nothing in so short a time - amazing work Doc - thank you so much!

See you at Family Day Brothers.

Thank you again,
Phil Holt

SUMMERFEST Drum Team Update

Posted on Jul 14 2010 - 2:31pm

The Summerfest Campfire, Sat night, will feature both Acheon and TQB Drums. We'll be playing some songs, and Acheon will be playing theirs. Eventually, we'll combine for something to be determined.

It's evident that we'll need all our tunes ready to perform. You new guys haven't heard the Flag Song before, and that seems to be something they're expecting us to provide. Also, the new traditional and intertribal songs need to be ready so we'll have enough to draw from throughout the program. Expect that we'll play Warrior's Song, Draggin' Canoe, TQB Nagaman, Seasons (Intertribal), and Feather River Flag Song. If you don't know these, learn them.

We're also meeting, as planned, Sunday, July 18, from 4-5:30PM. Same place, at DUMC. Plan to attend that as well. We'll be introducing a couple of new songs.

It's going to be a busy week. Hang in with us and this will take us into our regular schedule in August.

Call Jake if you have questions.

See you Tuesday,
Dr Sandlin

Drum Team Practice - Sunday, July 18, 4:00-5:30pm -TIME CHANGE!- (DUMC - T419 Scout Hut)

Posted on Jul 14 2010 - 2:28pm

NEXT PRACTICE:
Sunday, July 18 --  4:00-5:30pm -- NOTE TIME CHANGE!!!

Duluth United Methodist Church (DUMC) {in the Scout Hut behind the main building (T-419) off the rear parking lot}
3208 Duluth Highway 120
Duluth, GA 30096

Contact Jake Sandlin if you have questions: guitarhero1128@aol.com

The vocables and words to the tunes we covered can be found in the Files section of our chapter website. I'll also try emailing the tunes themselves for downloading via separate emails. Try running through the tunes several times over the coming weeks. They're easy to memorize if you keep them in your head.

If you are unable to make a practice, don't forget to contact Jake well in advance: guitarhero1128@aol.com

We've found that guys who attend at least 1/2 the practices are prepared to play with TQB Drum at performances. If you want to play in a competition, expect that you'll need to be at most all practices. If you are unable to attend at least 1/2 the scheduled dates, you'll be welcomed to play during practices. Just don't automatically expect to play at performances. Talk to Jake if you have questions regarding participation.

If you want to see more about powwow drumming, go to YouTube and search "powwow". There's tons of clips where you can see dancing and drums. The more you hear and see, the better you're going to be come the next practice.

Thanks again for the work today. I hope it was fun.
Dr Sandlin

URGENT -- SUMMERFEST DRUM TEAM UPDATE

Posted on Jul 7 2010 - 12:18pm

Jake has been contacted by the Summerfest chairman. The Lodge is asking us to play, though instructions are a bit vague. We don't know if they want us in a combined Drum with Acheon at the campfire, to share beating along with Acheon during the day Saturday (rotating powwow style), or to do all the playing either during the day or at the Saturday night campfire. Interestingly, I got a follow up call from our Lodge Adviser. He wanted to check that we had everything ready "to play something at the campfire." We'll have to get clarification as the event gets closer, but it's evident that we can't drop the ball on this one.

Right now, bottom line, we need to have our "A" game ready for Summerfest. All hands on deck with all songs learned. Also, we aren't scheduled to practice again until the day AFTER Summerfest (July 18th.) That needs to change.

Here's an action plan I'm recommending:

Wearing your OA Sash

Posted on Jun 21 2010 - 1:13am

Your OA sash is worn only with your Class A (Field) Uniform. It is NOT worn hanging over your belt or with a t-shirt. It should be worn at all OA events. It may also be worn to troop and Eagle Scout courts-of-honor. If you wear your merit badge sash, then the OA sash is NOT worn.

ALL REGISTERED SCOUT LEADERS, regardless of your position, MUST READ AND COMPLY WITH THIS MESSAGE!!!

Important Changes to the Boy Scouts of America's Youth Protection Training Policies
Recently, the Boy Scouts of America announced important changes to its Youth Protection policies. The purpose of these changes is to increase awareness of this societal problem and to create even greater barriers to abuse than already exist today in Scouting.
Effective June 1, 2010:
  • Youth Protection training is required for all BSA registered volunteers, regardless of their position.
  • New leaders are required to take Youth Protection training before submitting an application for registration. The certificate of completion for this training must be submitted at the time the application is made and before volunteer service with youth begins.
  • Youth Protection training must be taken every two years. If a volunteer's Youth Protection training record is not current at the time of recharter, the volunteer will not be reregistered.
To find out more about the Youth Protection policies of the Boy Scouts of America and how to help Scouting keep your family safe, see the Parent's Guide in any of the Cub Scouting or Boy Scouting handbooks, or go to http://www.scouting.org/Training/YouthProtection.aspx.
Questions and Answers
The following are answers to some of the questions we have received about these important changes. To read more, visit www.scouting.org/youthprotection.
